MSU 16th Convocation | A success to be shared.

I would like to dedicate this blog to the graduating Class of 2015. Now that graduation is over, what’s next? With plenty of opportunities around I don’t think so you need to worry excessively about getting a job. With the years spent at MSU I am positive you are sufficiently equipped for a career life. Rest assured, there is always something waiting for you out there, and quite frankly, as I was writing this piece, many of you have already secured full-time employments.

Besides the above, there could be a fraction of you who may find yourself working in an area that may not be directly relevant to your studies.  Should this happen, let me share with you that the time spent at the university is never wasted. Be open about career opportunities. There could be times when you might end up with a career choice that was never in your plans.

I am a Political Science graduate. Years ago when I was student like you, the assumptions were that I am destined to be a politician or something to do with politics at least.  I was never even close to any of those after my graduation. I began as a lecturer teaching Business Communication and my career went into several transformation stages until I reach what I am doing today. So, have I wasted my time at the university?  No, not at all. The university education had given me a good foundation and exposure   on how I can adapt and move forward with the career that I have. Much of what I am doing now is based on experience and the learning process as I go from day to day.  Most important, is to be prepared because sometimes things do not work out the way you want them. Your university education is what I would term as your preparation stage, and of course, the convocation marks your state of preparedness before that big leap into the career world.

Speaking of convocation, the recent one that we had was another success to remember.  As usual, the morning is always filled with anxiety, nervousness and full of expectations. As I drove into the parking area I saw graduates adjusting each other’s robes, tussles   and hoods.  There were plenty of smiles everywhere. The girls look pretty and the guys look handsome.  One thing for sure, everyone took convocation day seriously.

There were also happy parents giving the last good-old advise before the graduates began their procession into the Hall.  I will normally catch-up with the graduates at the foyer of Hibiscus and over here I would give the graduates one final check before they make their grand entrance into the Hall.

But nothing can beat the look of satisfaction on the graduates’ faces – the kind of look that seems to project the message that ” Yes ! We did it.”

Congrats to the Class of 2015!
