It’s a Matter of Choice

Yesterday was a day that journeyed through mixed feelings and emotions. SPM 2014 results were released with more than half a million of candidates nationwide were anxiously waiting to see what they got. Putting aside the constant coverage after coverage on the students’ and schools’ performances, one common question seems to be the focus for every SPM achievers – “So, where do I want to continue my studies?”

This morning, I had received call from a parent and what we chatted over an hour or so, gave an encouraging perspective, as to how students and parents choose the institutions or place to study. When asked what attracted them the most about MSU, they said, “Because MSU can choose what graduates it wants.” Being a private institution, MSU can grip over the quality of the programs and decide what skills the students should have.  Talking to the parent also confirmed my other observation that parents have looked into the selection of institutions based on various factors, and are saying that both private and public universities are at par, with the advantage given to private sectors due to industrial linkage and choice of programs.

The above is just among the reasons why parents and students choose the institution. Over the years, we have come across many other reasons. But, among the main ones are these:

  • Employability of the graduates
  • “At the end of the day, I want to see my children have jobs and am financially secured as well.

  •  Learning experience
  • “What are the skills my children will gain upon graduation? We are not just talking about communication skills, but also self management skills, organizing small projects and events etc.”

Long gone were the days when private institutions are viewed as second choice or are only available for financially strong parents. Hopefully this perspective will change; just as it has for MSU, where we receive admission from excellent students all over Malaysia – and some are top scholars too! We are also proud of our students, who have come from every facet of life and social background, and have gained employability upon graduation.

With the ever rapidly changing world and the need to compete, the graduates have to be introduced to the required skills and knowledge as early as possible. I do hope that more parents and students will have an open mind and explore more of the options available offered at private universities.

For those joining MSU for the March 2015 session, we are happy to have you with us. This is just the beginning, more is yet to come! Come join the ride!
